Advisor Training and Development in a Multi-Campus System

Presenters: Tyann Cherry, Dr. Michelle Loyet and Dr. Brian Daly

Event: NACADA National Conference, October 4-7 2012

From Indie Darling to Billboard Topper: Advisor Training and Professional Development in a Multi-Campus System. Effective advisor training is the foundation of any successful advising program, yet even the most basic training is absent at many institutions (Koring, 2005, NACADA Clearinghouse). This session will take you through the development of an advisor training program based on McCllelan's 2007 'Content Components for Advisor Training: Revisited.'. See first-hand how a training program was organically grown and consciously planned to address key components such as advising and career theory along with relational development. Technologies used include asynchronous online courses, a mentorship program, synchronous webinar series and detailed informational supports. Advisor training - it's not just reading degree audits anymore.

Thinking about colleges and careers at North Kirkwood Middle School

Presenter: Tyann Cherry
Place: North Kirkwood Middle School
Handouts

I was invited to speak at North Kirkwood Middle School as part of their Career Fair. My presentation will be two sessions for 25-30 8th grade students in each session. I was asked to provide information regarding what kids should know about college, transcripts, things that can hamper admission and what students can do now and throughout high school to prepare for higher education. Since the presentation is geared toward kids I incorporated a variety of activities and some additional follow up assignments that they can work on (see handouts). The goal was to personalize the experience for each participant as they consider their educational plans.

START Program - October 2010

I was invited to give a presentation on networking for the Webster University George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology START program. The START program (Student Transition And ReTention Program). The program is designed to provide 25 Junior and Senior minority students form St. Louis area city and county high schools a snapshot of the college experience. I love working with students that are making the transition from high school to college. Each and every time I truly feel like I am able to provide them with detailed inside information to help give them a head start.

You can find the handout that goes along with the presentation here.
